16mm FILM

WEEK 1

We began the first week with getting familiar with 16mm film, what it is and how we can use it.  We were shown camera equipment and the workings of the materials which kickstarted the origins for live action and animation. Picking from a selection of exposed, used and bleached 16 mm film strips we continued with our experimentation by etching, scratching or colouring to create our abstract artworks before running them from a 16mm film camera projector assisted by Lynn and Anna- Maria.

WEEK 2

In the second week we were left to find our own avenue using the examples shown to us the weeks prior. I quite enjoyed working with clear film as it had a sense of clarity and hypnosis to it. Running out of clear film I wet down to the photography studio in effort to clear some exposed film stripping it from its pigments. Unfortunately acetone solution was not strong enough to remove the pigment from exposed film and left a purple tint behind, the second solution: house grade bleach. The bleach cleared out the pigment stripping it to its clearest form leaving no residue behind as seen by the image below. clear bleached turned into dark purple gue, a return to chemistry.

WEEK 3

I chose paint as my medium to create my artwork on 16 mm film, I was inspired by microscopic division and cell regeneration as seen under a magnified lens. There are many unique shapes, colours and movement that come to life under the microscope which I hoped to replicate below using  clear 16mm film and small paint strokes of mostly primary colours of acrylic paint. I also enjoyed seeing the unintentional scratches and marks that add to the "rawness" of the look. yet I felt something was still missing, so I decided to add the finishing touches in post production the following week.

WEEK 4

Finalising the project I made a few changes adding chromatic abberation and moving the Effect across the timeline using after Effects.the end result reminded me of the introductory sequence to the movie Amelie which plays many classical musical instruments to mirror the moving life feeling that I am trying to replicate. Overall I am very satisfied with the end product.
