Dot  Project

The 5 stages of grief was my inspiration for this animation . I'm aware that not all stages can be considered within 5 seconds so i wanted to put the emphasis on 2 of those emotions . denial and depression . I want to depict denial as strongly as possible .

I created 2 storyboard. showing the 5 stages of grief and I stuck with a few shots , mixed and matched from each . I thought that having a perspective shot being brought to the front and back will show the connection and excitement's in the dots unity before the separation and the denial.

Storyboard 2

The first version of the animation was done Toon boom Harmony , it was done within one day as I wanted to create multiple version that were re-worked and re-adjusted as we went along, I decided on the motion path on storyboard two to show the flow and connection of the dots unified relationship. It also allowed a path to show the denial stage , as the remaining dot refuses to accept they have been left behind. The colour choices in the first Version was purple as the love (red symbolism ) would leave them blue, symbolising sadness. I later decided that wasn't the best decision as the colours did not work well when dividing from one another . the last part of this animation with the looking left and right did not depict the feelings i intended.

Version 1

Version 2 was much smoother and more dynamic than the first version . This was the version shown in the crit. The feedback given was that the separation and colour choices were improved upon in comparison to version 1 , however the ending was quite sudden and didn't depict the feelings of confusion as intended . The bounce was also far too sudden an required reworking .

Version 2

Version 3 is the final version of this animation.  For the bounce I used a water ballon for references as a change to the bouncing ball, this provided the perfect squash and stretch for the dot . I also added a moment of confusion were the dot looks around for their partner. this gave a moment of clarity that the dot has been left behind before turning blue . I would have preferred more time to depict the feeling of sadness more slowly, however I decided to stick to the brief as closely as possible t fit the 10 second timeframe . overall I learn quite a bit about timing and pacing form this animation process of working and re-working,

Version 3

Personal Reflection

I am quite proud of the outcome of the final version. I believe the animation becomes more fluid with each attempt as I continue to take in feedback given by my teachers , peers and classmates . Although the final "turning blue ' section of version 3 feels a little rushed , I believe all other aspects of the Animation have worked well together . I believe you can very clearly see and feel the separation of the two particles more vividly in version 2 and 3 in comparison to version 1, as well as the confusion in the particle after the denial stage . The bounce required some rethinking as I had to consider the forces/gravity  that were worked on by the particle and to consider what the particle could be made of, as the physicals of a bouncing ball didn't work quite well, whilst the reference of a bouncing water balloon seemed  to work much better. If i was to redo this animation I would spend more time working on motion paths and key frames as the frame by frame style of animation was time consuming.
