Grad Assist

Presentation (Week 1)

During this week we needed to present our work to the third years in order to be matched with the necessary skills required. This involved creating a showreel to the beat of a song as well as a short power point presentation highlighting our speciality and softwares. Whilst it was nerve racking to present, it was quite enjoyable seeing the progress made since the first year, especially with regards to regards to animation skills for myself . By the end of a long day I was happy to be matched with both friends of mine from third year: Princeley and Robyn. For Robyn I was to do colouring and masking in the more rough and traditional looking style on Toon boom Harmony (as i was familiar with the software), whilst for Princeley I was to work on backgrounds and puppet costume making as I have both 2D Illustration experience as well as Costume/sewing experience .

Week 2 (7.5 hours)

Slowly but surely I began this weeks work by working predominately on Robyn's colouring animation . The first hour was spent learning and getting familiar with the colouring technique, this required using a pastel brush and roughly creating diorganised lines within the bounds of the outline and then using a different matte colour, provided by Robyn, to fill in the mixing gaps between the colouring. After the matting process we needed to go over the underlay layer and clean up any matte colour that went over the outline. During the first week the understanding of the matting process took the longest time this took 4 hours of work in total. For Princeley project I simply worked from the the thumnail sketch provided as well as a colour scheme and creating the underground tunnel background on tv paint, this took 3.5 hour of work.

Week 3 (6.5 hours)

Similar to the previous week and getting a hang of the process a little better, I continued with the shots given to me by Robyn as well as a similar tunnel background for Princeley . The tunnel background was a little more difficult as the reference was flat whilst the was required to run in depth , do i had to collect a few referenced of what the side of a tunnel would look like . 3d model were very beneficial in that.

Week 4 (5 hours)

A continuation of the previous week , I did a fe more shots for Robyns  colouring, whilst I had to put a pause on Prineceley work, To allow time for the puppet and armeture to be made before applying the costume , Princeley also need to redesign the dungarees to create a more farmers look , which allowed me some time to look into youtube videos and puppet making practise before create the final costume. During this week I had issues with exporting one of the shots seen below which meant I had lost al of the colouring for that shot, whilst it was frustrating i managed to redo the shot in half of the time the next day.

WEEK 7 (22 hours)

This week was a focus on creating the puppet costumes for Princeley's Stop motion character. After printing ou the patterns for the shoes and attempting 3 trial and errors I found a pattern from Etsy which I used the base of for the top part of the shoes , then I used  super sculpt to create the bottom of the shoe. The costume of the dungaree and top were also created through trial and error . but landed on using a sewing machine for cleaner lines.
